Quick jaunt down to Cramond for a bit of a bike ride. We concentrate on one thing at a time, and today was steering day. Holly's getting pretty good at it, but today broke protocol by pedalling for a bit too. Still, it's going to be a while before we get to balancing...

The Railway Children
An upside-down week, with Helen off work on Monday, and me on Friday. Thought the kiddies might like a train journey, so we took a bus into town and jumped on the first train across the Forth Bridge. Lo and behold, we found ourselves in North Queensferry so wandered down to Deep Sea World (there's hardly anything else in NQ) for lunch. Had a great time wandering in the big plastic tube under the shark tank, watching the feeding, touching the smaller fish and crustaceans, and waiting for the train home. Felt strange having a family day out without Helen, so we'll invite her along next time!
Forgotten Farm
The day before last week's snowfall, we met up with the Evanses at Gorgie City Farm. It was bitterly cold but we still managed a quick circuit and a wee clamber on the red tractor before retreating to Jemima's Pantry for lunch. I forgot about the pictures until they popped on my phone today...

White Stuff
This morning, after taking Helen to work, drizzle turned to rain turned to sleet which turned - finally - to snow! This ain't Canada though - it was wet and soggy and no more than a centimetre's worth - but it was undeniably snow. Seizing the moment as one must in Edinburgh, we headed out into the (usefully sloped) back garden and did a bit of snowballing and sledging. The snow melted as we walked on it, and Holly and Louis soon got wet and cold, but the principle was very much established and we retired to the house for a warming bowl of chicken soup. The snow was all but gone by teatime.

The Future's So Bright...
I gotta wear shades. Monday morning, and Louis came across Holly's sunglasses while we were getting ready to take Helen to work. Later on, I took the kids to the museum (I'm running short of inspiration for cold, wet Mondays), and in a turn-up for the books Louis got dressed up in Holly's usual 16th Century dress...

Happy New Haircut!
Louis' hair has been getting a bit Boris Johnson recently, so after the run on Saturday we took him and Holly for a haircut. They were both very well-behaved, and the whole exercise passed without major difficulty. Also included here a few pictures from last week, including Louis dressed as a fairy by Holly. The cross-dressing continues...
In the meantime, dad and Niall have also posted pictures - and video! - from the run if you're interested.
And as if that wasn't enough, the Evening News cover it here.

Job Done!
Saturday 10th January blew in cold, wet and very windy. A couple of thousand hardy souls, Helen and I included, turned out in Holyrood Park to run 5k round Arthur's Seat. Niall and Michele ran with us, and Calum did the junior 2k run in the morning. It was tough going. The climb up to Dunsapie Loch is a stiff one, and the wind was in our faces coming round the back to the Commonwealth pool. The home straight was downhill with a following wind, but by then the legs were heavy as lead. Still, I managed a 24:59, and Helen did 29:41, both of us coming in just inside our target times, which is pretty good going. Helen hated every minute of it, and has vowed not to run again for a very long time!
The main thing though, is that as of today we've raised £1636.01 for the Sick Kids on our Justgiving page. It's a great total, and much more than we expected to raise, so a big thank you to all friends, family and colleagues who donated so generously. The page is open for donations until 10th April, so tell your friends!
More non-running content coming soon...

Giving Something Back
Avid readers of this blog may remember that we recently spent a very scary few weeks with Louis at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Edinburgh. Thankfully he's all better now :)
The hospital and staff were amazing, however they rely heavily on charitable donations to keep the support facilities for kids and families running.
So, we're dusting off our trainers and running 5km round Arthur's Seat next Saturday (10th January 2008) to raise some funds for the hospital foundation.
If you could spare a few pennies, we'd be most grateful - click here to visit our Justgiving page, or use the widget in the sidebar at the right.
Many thanks in anticipation, we hope you'll help us give something back to the Sick Kids.

Happy New Year!
Happy New Year! Holly started the year by putting her swimming costume on (over her clothes) and pretending to swim around the living room, co-opting Louis into the game as well. He seemed to enjoy it well enough. In the afternoon (the days are just melting away at the moment) we went for a wintry stroll around the pond at Craiglockhart, which was frozen. We enjoyed standing on the ice, then smashing it and throwing it out onto the pond to hear the fabulous resonant pinging sound. Then we went to Grandma & Papa's for a heat and a first foot.
