Epic

Here's Louis on the cycle path bridge over the main road at Roseburn. This was on the homeward leg of his epic bike ride on Monday, a 7.67 mile outing that took in the Skatepark and a visit to Grandma Sheila's. It wasn't quick, but he pedalled the whole way himself, and never showed any sign of getting tired or fed up. He slept till after 7 the next day though.

A selection of pictures from the last few weeks that have been languishing on our phones and cameras. We have Holly having a pony ride at the school fair; Louis asleep in the bike seat on the way to Nate's 3rd birthday party; a trip to Cramond with Auntie Kate; running about after swimming lessons; buried in the sand, pedalling around the garden on a gorgeous warm evening, and Louis crashed out after an exhausting weekend.

Session

Through the gate, down the drive, and right onto the grass. Louis sessions that tricky right-hander and nails it. Hands off the brakes, eyes on the trail ahead and shoulder down into the corner...

Beside The Seaside

Auntie Kate was in town this weekend, and we all trundled down to Cramond. The sun was shining, the sky was blue, and it wasn't quite as cold as it has been lately. The idea was to do a bit of cycling, but we ended up down by the sea skimming stones and looking for shells. Lo and behold, Holly ended up half naked in the water and Louis - little mimic that he is - soon followed suit.

Take To The Stage

Holly's scene from her Ballet School's bi-annual show. Holly's second from the left. Reviewing this video clip, she pronounced "I look ridiculous in that costume."

Drumtochty 2010

Another May, another Great Drumtochty Challenge. Keith and I once again headed for Aberdeenshire on Sunday to spend five hours pedalling around the hilly forests of Drumtochty. This year seemed harder than usual, with more than the usual amount of pushing uphill on roads strewn with boulders the size of babies' heads, uphill through knee-deep bogs, or through falllen trees. In the event, we again came second (or "first losers") in our category, the "Male Veteran Team". Here are a few pics snapped by veteran Keith.

Summer Bedtime

I arrived home from work this evening to find Holly already in her jammies, and desperate to show Helen and I her jumping off her play house in the garden. This simple demonstration turned into a tree-climbing session, despite my protestations. These bright, balmy (OK, not too cold) evenings make it harder to enforce bedtime.

Louis Goes To Saughton

DSCF0007.JPG
Originally uploaded by Fraser Millar
This afternoon Louis and I visited Saughton. The new skatepark, that is, rather than the prison of the same name. After a brief tootle on the skateboard, which he pronounced was "a bit difficult," he was soon back in his comfort zone on two wheels, and "shredding" the ramps with the best of them. Some surly teenagers even paused to remark upon his excellent skills, with one young fellow remarking that he didn't learn to ride a bike until he was six, this before flying 10ft through the air and landing backwards on one wheel. That'll be Louis soon enough...

Dishes, Dalkeith & Dinner

Oh alright, it was lunch - but alliteration trumps accuracy any day. This weekend - apart from playing host to P1 mascot Walt - we didn't have a lot planned but ended up busy anyway. Saturday morning was dominated by Louis "helping" with the dishes - that ended messily. In the afternoon we met Dave & Paula at Dalkeith Country Estate, and much fun was had on the big slides and swinging tractor tyres. Sunday lunch was a family affair in honour of Laura and Calum's respective birthdays, and there are more pictures from Scott here.

Last weekend, Holly took three of her school pals to the cinema. She'd won Odeon tickets in some draw or other at school, and Helen bravely sat through Nanny McPhee with Holly, Eloise, Rachel and Isla. The film passed without incident, and while the group review amounted to no more than "it was fine", the outing was a great success, especially after the protracted dressing-up session chez nous afterwards. I shudder to think what this bunch will be like in 10 years time...

Walt's Weekend

Holly was Star Person in her P1 class last week. Among the manifold perks associated with this lofty accolade comes the opportunity to take home Walt, the class mascot, for the weekend. Walt may only be a simple bear, but he has a fat and entertaining diary of his weekend sleepovers, of which there have been a great many this year. Overcome by parental competitiveness, I used Comic Life to help Holly put together this wee addition to the journal. I can hear the other parents tutting in disgust even now.

After all that desktop publishing, today we headed out to the pool as usual, but with the added twist that all three of us (Helen's work, alas, doesn't seem to honour public holidays) travelled on two wheels. Two miles there and two miles back on the cycle path, I was well impressed with kiddies and their developing cycling skills.
