A Walk In The Woods

A chilly January morning, and we headed up Corstorphine Hill with the Stirlings. Many fallen trees still litter the area, providing much scope for clambering and exploration.

Climb Every Mountain

On Sunday, we were at the EICA at Ratho. Holly used her voucher (from Niall, Laura and Skye) for an hour's one-on-one climbing session with an instructor. He started her off top-roped at the low, "easy" end of the Tower Wall, then straight onto the 60ft Main Wall before returning to the Tower for a corner and an overhanging ascent. The session finished with a bit of rope-free bouldering. Holly was amazing, and loved it too. I just stood watching her and grinning like an idiot the whole time. I *must* get a longer lens...

Cool Walkings

Today, under a clear blue sky and a crisp frost, we went for a stroll up the Pentlands with the full quorum of Edinburgh Millars. The occasion was Niall's birthday, and after throwing a few found objects into Glencorse reservoir, we returned to the Flotterstone Inn for a celebratory meal. The kids did very well with the walking, and Holly was very curious about C.T.R. Wilson's cloud chamber, an apposite subject because I'm reading about particle physics at the moment, and was actually able to explain what it was for. A nice father-daughter science moment.

Timber!

It got a bit windy in Edinburgh recently. Wind speeds of 102mph were recorded (on Blackford Hill, I think) and many trees are down around the city. We visited Lauriston Castle at the weekend, and discovered that one of the victims is the grand old Scots Pine (I think) that sat in the middle of the south meadow. It's not often the kids get to climb a 60ft tree, it's just a shame it had to be lying down for them to do it. We also visited the recently-reopened National Museum of Scotland, and found - among other splendid things - an area where you can examine a dinosaur skeleton while dressed as a scuba diver.

Christmas in Essex

Happy new year! We've been back a few days now, but we spent Christmas week with Grandma Pat & Granddad John in Essex. Much excitement was in evidence on Christmas morning, and the following days were filled with - among other things - eating and drinking, washing cars and scooting at the skatepark. We also had a visit from Peter and Bea, who were back in the country for the festive season.
