Gardening on Monday, we found this wasps' nest in the shed. It was unoccupied, so we plucked it out so that Holly could take it to school.

We Are Scientists
A combination of sunshine outside and it being the last day meant the Science Festival (or the City Art Centre part thereof) wasn't horrendously busy today. As the kids get older, they - Holly especially - can participate in more and more activities. Between them today they made a DNA bracelet, a red blood cell and a virus, explored the jungle, drove a radio control robot, created a "meat muncher" and a "grass muncher", stuck a finger in a sheep's heart, operated a "toroidal gas pulse generator" (to start the chain reactor), dug up some fossils, found out how insulin worked, made gooey worms and slime (and threw them at a proper scientist), made huge bubbles, coloured in some sciencey pictures, designed a tidying-up robot, mummified an apple and jumped down the stairs to test the gravity. Go science!

Arthur's Seat
Five years ago, give or take a day or two, we rolled Easter eggs on the lower slopes of Arthur's Seat, two days after Louis was born. Today, aged five and a day or two, he gained the summit under his own steam. It was a slow process, but he seemed to enjoy the sensation of being at the highest spot for miles around. What he *really* enjoyed was running back down again at top speed, despite slipping and falling many times. Much easier for a five year old than a grownup! The rest of us stoically endured the rain and the cold wind, but we did enjoy the visit to Pat & John's new flat afterwards. Oh, and a daft swan on Dunsapie Loch tried to eat my shoe.

Fifth Amendment
Today saw the latest of the birthday celebrations, this time combined with the annual festival of resurrection and ovoid chocolate that is Easter. We had the combined Millars & Lodges round for an egg hunt, pizza and - implausibly - cricket. In case you're wondering, Helen got a piano for her birthday, and in this picture she and Louis - who prefers guitar - are performing an air duet.

Birthday
Friday 6th April, and a joint birthday for Helen and Louis. We started in the morning with pressies, then had a wee outing to Malmaison for coffee and cakes - it's Helen's birthday too, after all! Later in the afternoon, we had the grandparents and Dave & Paula round for drinkies, fish suppers from the Corbie, and comedy facial accessories.

Party On (Dude)
We had a wee birthday party for Louis at Ainslie Park on Sunday. There was a bouncy castle, and various sport-related running-about activities. We did pass the parcel and musical statues (with bonus points for funny faces) before sitting down for the traditional sausage roll, sandwiches and cake. Then it was back home to check out the swag. An excellent wee afternoon.
