Some Like It Hot

We now have a double oven. I fitted it myself. I am the king of DIY :-)

Cuisine Fini

We've been back in the house for a week and a bit, and the kitchen feels good, as if it should always have been this way. The big windows and new skylight make it splendid in the sunshine, and it's lovely to be all in the same room when we're cooking/eating/doing homework. Today, the glass splashback was finally fitted, and it's stunning. It completes the room. One of the settees has also arrived for the new "family" room but there's still another one to come and we haven't quite figured that part out yet. The eagle-eyed among you will notice the different colour temperatures of the lights on the left and right, but Finishing Touches and their attention to detail are already on the case with that one. Highly recommended, by the way, if you've got a bit of work to do on the house.

All-you-can-eat is a concept I could get used to, and it's a good family-friendly place for the kids to run around when they inevitably get fed up sitting at the table. Afterwards, we had everyone back for tea and birthday cake, and to have a nose at the almost-completed kitchen. By fluke, I was able to get a picture of all four cousins together, looking at the camera, and smiling.

Painters & Decorators Are In

The floor's down, the skirting boards are on, miscellanous finishing tasks have been completed, and the painting has started. Just a base coat so far (so it's not the final colour) and the "new" kitchen is still custard-yellow. It's coming together, but the bad news is that there's still plenty to do, and we won't be moving home this weekend. Another week of to-and-fro for the nomadic Millars.

Cuisinart

Vince warned us that there wouldn't be so much visible progress in the middle two weeks; sure enough the kitchen shape is very much evident, but the devil is in the details - sorting out the drainage, finishing the gaps and odd corners, preparing to lay the floor. We're now into week 5 and have moved out of our Ravelston pied a terre and Helen and I have taken up residence in our respective parents' abodes, taking one kiddie each with us. It's going to be a complicated week, but with a bit of luck and a following wind we'll get back into the house next weekend, with only a bit of decorating and finishing to go on around us in week 6. In the meantime, Holly and I have been expressing our artistic selves. One in chalk and paper at Ikea, one on a freebie iPhone app. See if you can guess which is which?

Plastered

The plasterer's been in, skimming most of the wall surfaces in the "new" room and squaring off the nasty arched press. The floors are all level, and the oak flooring's been delivered and is resting, waiting to be laid. The vent's in for the extractor hood, and all the carcasses are now in place, in both the kitchen and the utility room. Colours have been selected for the glass splashback and the walls, and even the fridge is in and turned on (no doubt to keep the builders' Irn Bru properly chilled). There's also a dirty great hole outside for drainage, which an unsuspecting visiting cyclist could easily fall into...

Half Way House

We're two weeks - and halfway - into our sojourn in sunny Ravelston. While the flat has many idiosyncrasies, it's far from squalid and has a magnificent view out to the castle and Arthur's Seat. Meanwhile at home, the plasterboard is up in the old kitchen area, and the new kitchen is starting to take shape. I visited this morning, and the guys were up on the roof, preparing to finally install the Velux skylight. It's all very exciting. Louis, on the other hand, is more excited by his current favourite game, Ten Green Bottles.

Kitchen Update, Week 2

Plus a bit of climbing. I took the kids to Monkey Bizness on a dreich Saturday afternoon while Helen went shopping for chairs. Holly - of her own volition - waited patiently in line, put on the harness, and had a great session on the climbing wall. The next day, she found an exciting tree to climb in Ravelston Wood while Louis bombed around the muddy, leafy paths on his bike.

The Wall

I popped in to the house on the way home lastnight, ostensibly to pick up the trailer but also to have a nose around. The guys were still working, and have already taken down the kitchen wall, cut a hole for the skylight in the extension roof, lifted the floors and removed the joinery from under the stairs. Tommy (I think) was busy stripping the electrics and plumbing from the old kitchen area. Very impressed.

On The Move

We took up temporary residence in our Ravelston pied a terre this weekend. We have no internet connection, so updates may be sketchy. Suffice to say we all got moved and settled in with no major traumas, and then Monday was pretty much business as usual. Holly was still off school, so we went to the house to meet Vince, then went for a hot chocolate and a haircut. After lunch we went for a wee walk to explore Ravelston Wood, which leads us down to a familiar park without so much as crossing a road.
